Creekside Supports Adoption

TIPS FOR THE 1ST WEEK
The first week is all about patience, kindness, and building trust. You've got this!
Create a Safe Space
Set up a quiet area with food, water, a comfy bed, and toys. Let your pet explore at their own pace.
Give Them Time
Adjusting to a new home can take days, weeks, or even months. Patience is key!
Keep Routines Simple
Stick to a consistent schedule for meals, potty breaks, playtime, and rest.
Go Slow on Introductions
Introduce new people, pets, and environments gradually. Don't rush the process.
Use Positive Reinforcement
Praise, treats, and gentle encouragement help build confidence and trust. Avoid punishment.
Watch for Stress Signs
Hiding, pacing, panting, growling, or not eating can mean your pet is overwhelmed. Give them space and time.
Schedule a Vet Visit
A wellness check helps start your pet off on the right paw!
EXPECTATIONS FOR YOUR NEW PET AS THEY ADJUST TO THEIR NEW HOME WITH YOU
They May Feel Scared or Unsure
It's normal for pets to feel overwhelmed at first. They've left everything familiar behind.
They May Hide
Hiding is a coping mechanism, not a sign of disobedience. Let them come out when they're ready.
Their Appetite May Change
Some pets may eat less or not at all in the first few days. This is usually temporary.
They May Be More Active at Night
Many pets adjust to a new home's rhythm. Give it time and keep nighttime interactions calm and quiet.
Behavior May Fluctuate
They might be really sweet one moment and anxious or withdrawn the next. Consistency, patience, and kindness go a long way.
It Takes Time
The "3-3-3 Rule" is a helpful guide:
- 3 days to decompress
- 3 weeks to learn your routine
- 3 months to start feeling at home
Every pet is different—some need more time, and that's okay.
